Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) has always been a popular character, but some fans weren’t happy with the version that returned from Nixon Falls.
It almost felt like Sonny held onto a little piece of “Mike” – especially since he was so much softer in his relationship with Nina Corinthos (Cynthia Watros).
Of course, some viewers loved the change and felt it was nice to see Sonny evolve.
Others thought Sonny basically became a different character and felt he was no longer tough enough to be a believable mob boss.
However, Sonny has been undergoing an interesting reboot lately. It seems like an overhaul that’s perhaps taking Sonny back to his mob boss roots.
Now that Sonny has dumped Nina and suffered a series of betrayals, he’s reverted to his brooding, barware-throwing self.
Sonny has more of an edge and feels more dangerous like a menacing mobster should.
Plus, the show’s offering an unvarnished view of Sonny instead of trying to gloss over his messy past and make him a big teddy bear.
They suddenly aren’t shying away from things like Sonny’s treatment of Karen Wexler (Marie Wilson), his exploitation of Stone Cates’ (Michael Sutton) situation and the fact that Sonny has repeatedly put Dante Falconeri’s (Dominic Zamprogna) life on the line.
On social media, fans have been offering praise for some of the writing shifts since it feels like the real Sonny Corinthos is back in many ways.
Sonny is a complex character who isn’t entirely bad or entirely good – and that’s what makes him so fascinating!
