We were thrilled beyond thrilled to tune in to Peacock’s Days of Our Lives on May 1. During the episode, we were introduced to a character who is our new insta-favorite: Rita.

A throwback to the classic wisecracking second bananas of yore, Maggie Carney’s Salem alter ego is EJ’s assistant, Rita — and she’s not new to the role, either. According to Rita, she’s worked for every DiMera Enterprises bigwig dating back to Stefano. As such, she was in a unique position to note that of her bosses over the years have had one thing in common: They’re “arrogant, rude and egotistical.”

It was clear from the start that Rita and the D.A. had a regular schtick already worked out. He was his usual demanding self, and she put up with a total of… none of it. She even insisted that, forget his millions, he mind his Ps and Qs!

If anyone was going to be able to help him make nice with the mayor, it was obviously going to be Rita!

Before the new tag team was done, EJ reminded Rita that he paid her far better than even his paralegal. “I’m sure your actual paralegal is thrilled about that,” she remarked. With every utterance, we were more enamored of this everywoman — the kind of average Jane that we can all relate to. Here’s hoping we see a lot more of her. She feels like classic days and classic soap. (Remember assistants past like Renfield on Santa Barbara and Darla on Bold & Beautiful?)
